ENGLISH

Our English teachers:
Ms. Quinn
Ms. Mc Partland

Fifth Year students and their English teachers recently travelled to the Helix in Dublin to see Brian Friel’s masterpiece, Dancing at Lughnasa. This evocative play which is one of the texts studied for Leaving Certificate, captures the lives of five spinster sisters in Ballybeg, Donegal during the summer of 1936 when their lives are changed forever. As Michael says ‘of things changing too quickly before my eyes, of becoming what they ought not to be’. The students were treated to a magical experience of seeing one of the greatest plays of Irish drama.

Class Learning:

Date activity took place: 20 May 2010

Group Work and activities in an integral part of everyday learning in Lough Allen College. Recently while studying certain aspects of Media Studies, Miss Mc Partlan brought items into the classroom and some junior cert students had to guess what type of products may appeal to certain age groups. This in turn allowed them to remember certain terms such as target audience and Niche market. They also benefited from picking out slogan, logos, brand names and buzz words from the products. It was interesting and the students felt that they would remember the terms much easier.

Testimonials:

Barry Mc Govern: I know more about slogans and logos

Dean Brolly: It gave me more information going into the exam and how to answer the questions.

Gerard Clarke: I now know what the advantages and disadvantages of advertising are.

Other aspects covered in class:

MEDIA STUDIES

Functions of advertising:

  • To sell a product e.g. Shampoo
  • To sell a service e.g. Window cleaning
  • To warn the public e.g. Don’t drink and drive.
  • To inform the public e.g. Concert taking place

Advertising has therefore two functions

  • to inform
  • to persuade.

The following terms are important:

Target Audience:
Who is the advertisement pitched at… young children/parents/teenagers/group of readers/listeners etc. Is it a group of girls or boys? How do we know this?

Brand Name:
Think of milk – Connacht Gold/NCF/Nike/Coca Cola/Pepsi/L’Oreal

Logo:
A symbol to make the product recognisable – Adidas has three stripes/ Volkswagen logo/Nike – the tick mark. Spar- the symbol of the tree.

Slogan:
(Phrases used by advertisers to make products more attractive)
Tesco – Every little Helps
Spar – Under the tree at Spar.
Baked Beans – Beans Means Heinz.

Buzz Words:
Examples: Fresh/light/Exotic/unique
These are upbeat words to create an impression.

Use of colour:
Colour grabs the reader’s attention/Colour makes an article/picture/product stand out. It also gives emphasis.
White suggests purity. Red suggests passion. Colour is very eye – catching.

Use of props:
Candle may suggest hope

Use of chairs/table etc:
Also where is the product placed in the picture – Is it at the centre/background……..

Size of the font (Writing):
The size of the writing will grab the reader’s attention immediately. It is normally the first thing they will notice.

Why is advertising good:

  • It provides jobs
  • It helps commerce which will in turn create jobs.
  • It creates competitions and this gives people more choice.
  • Sponsorship – Many companies sponsor sporting/educational events. E.g. –Football matches – Vodafone/Star Newspaper/Bank of Ireland/Cadbury.

Why is advertising bad:

  • The negative side of products is never mentioned. E.g. – Fat content/Sugar intake/side effects
  • You buy things that you don’t even need.
  • Advertising is expensive and it increases the price of products.Advertisers promise a better life. Eg. You have to be thin to be beautiful. This is untrue.

French Coffee Morning in Lough Allen College

For the second year running, Leaving Certificate students got a taste of what life in France is all about!!! On Wednesday 19th May, a coffee morning took place in the French Room. The French theme was added by labelling all food while French music was playing in the background. With the Leaving Certificate looming in the next three weeks, the idea was to allow all students relax and enjoy the atmosphere and most importantly remember what learning French is all about…..

Des baguettes, du fromage, du jambon, le café et le the, des raisins, le crabe, des croissants, la confiture et plus !!!

Aisling, Marie et Aideen aiment bien les croissants

 French Drama

On Wednesday 7th January 2009, Lough Allen College brought France to their school in the form of drama.

The company FTTS (French theatre for schools) are based in Dublin and only use native French speaking professional actors. The actors are trained to speak slowly and clearly.  The abundance of visual action and repetition allows students of all abilities to understand. They performed two plays, one for senior students and one for junior.

Lough Allen College really enjoyed their performance and students also got the opportunity to participate in the play.

Check out some of the pictures!!!!

LCVP VISIT OUT TO MASONITE, CARRICK-ON-SHANNON

On Tuesday 8th of March, Ms Dore along with the LCVP class visited Masonite, Carrick-on-Shannon. Jackie Guckian, the Human Resources Administrator greeted our group and made us feel very welcome. Jackie then provided us with a very informative presentation on Masonite.

The information given to the students was very clear and easy to understand. Next the class were provided with protective clothing and given a tour of the factory, which was described by one student as "brilliant". The tour guides were Ray Sweeney, Caroline Ward and Michael Rowley. Finally on our return we were provided with refreshments and Jackie answered many questions asked by our students.

We would sincerely like to thank Jackie and her team for a very interesting tour and presentation. The students have gathered a lot of information for their LCVP portfolio.
