Tyndall Lecture for Schools - NUI Galway 2012

On February 1st our Fourth year Physics&Chemistry class travelled to NUI Galway to attend the annual Tyndall Lecture for Schools. This year the title was "The Big Bang - Is it true?" by Dr. Cormac O Raifeartaigh of Waterford IT, who delivered ober the course of an hour an interesting and informative account of the origins of the Universe as we know it today. Afterwards, our students were given a tour of the Physics Department at the University, where post-graduate students gave participants an overview of the various areas of research spearheaded by the college, such as Atmospheric Physics, Medical Physics, Applied Optics and Astrophysics, where students were treated to a high tech 3D display of the universe!

Students were accompanied on the day trip by their teacher Mr. Doherty.

Lough Allen College Students speak out on Mental Health - 2012

The Leitrim County final of the 2011-12 Breffni Mental Health Ireland Public Speaking competition recently took place in the Bush Hotel, Carrick-on-Shannon. Representing Lough Allen College, Michael Clancy, Shannon O Grady and Kate Byrne took to the podium to speak about their chosen topic. ‘Mental Health is Everyone’s Business’. Their Tutor is Rachel Shannon.

Competing against Mohill community College, Lough Allen will go on to participate in the Regional finals which will take place on the 22nd of February in the Sligo Park Hotel at 1:30.

It is important to remember that this Public Speaking Project is so much more than a competition. With so many young people experiencing difficulties, the aim is to promote awareness of the importance of positive mental health, reduce negative attitudes and highlight the services that are available for everyone in our community.

St Patrick's Day Parade 2011

On Sunday 13th March 2011 Lough Allen College took part in the Annual Drumkeeran St Patricks Day Parade.

The school float which won a trophy for Best Traditional entry consisted of students from 1st to 4th Year.

Students who walked in front of the float wore our new Coláiste Loch Aillion t-shirts. Well done to all the students who helped out with decorating the float and came in to school on the Sunday to set up and practice. The excellent banner was designed by Mr Meade and 2nd Year art students. Mrs Watson organized the music students who performed the traditional music on the float. Many thanks to all staff who helped out: Ms King, Mr Gilhooley, Ms Tiernan, Mrs Grogan and Ms Mc Brien who co-ordinated the work in conjunction with the parents association. It was a really enjoyable day despite the dull weather.
