Cardiovascular disease is Ireland’s biggest killer disease with over 10,000 deaths every year. Approx 18 people die every day from cardiac arrest in Ireland, outside of hospital. Therefore it is imperative that communities and schools are equipped and prepared to respond in the event of an emergency. Research has shown that early intervention can have a major impact on survival rates from sudden cardiac arrest. With this in mind we hope to strengthen every link in the “Chain of Survival” in Drumkeeran and its neighbouring areas. This involves the training of Basic Life Support and the use of a defibrillator which is potentially life-saving. It could mean the difference between saving the life of someone close to you or not. This very worthy project is dependent on community participation and we encourage young and not so young to learn these basic skills.
During the academic year 2007/2008, Miss McPartlan commenced fund-raising for a defibrillator which was finally purchased in March 2008. Many fund-raising events took place including cakes sales, raffles, guessing how many sweets were in the jar, a talent competition and many other events. Without all the students’ hard work, commitment and brainstorming, over €2000 would not have been raised. The defibrillator is now available for all local football matches and any sporting events that take place in the community.
Both teachers and staff underwent CPR and defibrillator training in March 2010 and all are now certified in responding should a case of emergency arise.
On the 13th of May 2010 our music teacher Mrs Watson organised for a visit from traditional band "Dervish" to LAC to meet with some of our own musicians and all of our music students. Tunes were played, stories told and questions answered.
This was a most enjoyable hour and our only wish was that it could have been longer. Here are some pictures of Dervish in action in LAC........

‘Lough Allen’s Got Talent,’ a recent fundraiser in aid of Bóthar directed by Ms Dore and the fourth year L.C.V.P. students took place on Thursday the 23rd of April. We raised almost five hundred euro for this worthy charity. Bóthar, which was established in 1991, is an organisation that works with families in the developing world who find themselves poverty stricken. Bóthar specialise in livestock aid and enables families and communities worldwide to overcome hunger and poverty and to restore the environment in a sustainable way. The beauty of the Bóthar approach is in its simplicity. As the old adage goes: "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day, but teach a man how to fish and he will feed himself for the rest of his days." Bóthar supplies various livestock, worms, snails, rabbits, pigs, guinea fowl, dairy goats, dairy camels and dairy heifers. Our contribution will go towards the purchase of a dairy goat and a share of other livestock. This will change the lives of struggling families as they will have control over their farms and futures, and, over time, can lift themselves up to a position of relative comfort with dignity and pride.
This fundraiser would not have been a success without the participation of the various talented students of Lough Allen College. Martin Clancy (Chairperson of the Talent Show Committee) opened the show and introduced our presenters Patrick Mc Partlan and Heather Telford. The show opened with “Ceol Cúig” which included Deirdre Devitt, Michelle McNama, Kate Byrne, Caroline Fallon and Thomas Mc Partlan. They played a wide range of traditional music and Thomas entertained us with Irish dancing. Next to take the stage was Inez Hargaden who sang “Getaway Car” by Audioslave. This was followed by Shane Fee who played “Sonata Pathetique” by Beethovan on the keyboard.
Our fourth Act was Rosalina Abramian who entertained us with her Turish dance. Udo Grunewald then took to the stage with a solo performance on the bass. Our sixth Act was Shannon O’ Grady who sang “Take a Bow” by Rihanna. Aoife Mc Kenna then arrived on stage as the seventh Act and entertained us with some Irish dancing. Next we introduced a television to the stage where Marie Byrne was shown doing her own version of the “eyebrows dance” originally seen on the recent Cadburys add. Suzie Mc Govern then followed, singing “Love Story” by Taylor Swift. Jason Mc Govern was up next playing some lively traditional music on the accordion. Our eleventh act was James Hazlett singing “Hallelujah” by Jeff Buckely. This was followed by the MBD’s, namely Brenna Dolan, Michaelaigh Nolan, Marie Byrne, Deirdre Devitt and Michelle Mc Nama who sang “Halo” by Beyonce.
Our thirteenth Act was the Mc Manus brothers - Liam, Sean and Ciaran who entertained us with traditional music along with Ciaran doing some Irish dancing. Our grand finale was “The Recession Busters”. These included Martin Clancy, Michael Gallagher, Jason Mc Loughlin, Patrick Mc Partlan, James Hazlett and Félim Mc Hugh. These lads did an amazing version of “YMCA” and got the whole school to their feet for the final chorus with their first class choreography. Finally Martin Clancy presented all those who took part in the talent show with a Certificate of Participation. Well done to all the Acts who performed with confidence at the show. We should all be proud of the great talent in Lough Allen College.
I would like to thank the fourth year L.C.V.P students who organised the show and sought out the various different acts to perform, without their hard-work the talent show would never have succeeded in the way that it did. I would also like to thank Ms. Dore, the Production Director, who was ably assisted by the stage managers Mr. Doherty and Mr. Gilhooly. They kept everything running smoothly, both on the day and in the weeks leading up to the show. We would also like to thank Ms Watson, our Musical Director who assisted some of the musical Acts. On behalf of the fourth year L.C.V.P class I would also like to thank the students, teachers and invited guests who contributed to Bothár. Their generosity is greatly appreciated. The Talent Show Committee consisted of Martin Clancy, (Chairperson) Emma Bradley, (Secretary) Brana Gadsby and Mark Kelly (Treasurers) along with James Hazlett and Fern Skelton (Public Relations).
Pat Mc Carrick from Bóthar then came to Lough Allen College after the talent show to give us an idea of how our contribution will change the lives of families in the developing world and to show his appreciation for the money and awareness raised through “Lough Allen’s Got Talent”.
